5 Steps to Become An Effective Copywriter

Copywriting is the science of using the written word to sell a product or service. A good copywriter is able to convince customers to take action, either through billboards, digital ads, blog posts, emails and more. A copywriter is important because it is the glue that ties your whole marketing plan together. A copy gives design meaning, and leverages on content marketing and SEO. The better the copy, the better the chances of converting prospective customers.

But how exactly can you be an effective copywriter? Today we’re looking at 5 steps that make you an effective copywriter and use your skill to tell a compelling story to convince customers.

1. Know your audience
The world is full of ads, especially in this day and age of digital marketing. However, as a copywriter, your job requires you not to reach out to everyone in the world, but create ads that work for specific audiences. This means that you will have to know your audience, and ensure that you craft a copy that suits your targeted audience. Research your customers thoroughly and use your copy to reach out to the people who will most likely react to your copy.

2. Focus on the customer
As a copywriter, you should always know how you are addressing your customers in your copy. The majority of your copy should be written in a way that speaks to your target audience; meaning the focus should be on “you”, as in your customer rather than on “we”. Speaking directly to your customers through your copy is more personal and more effective. By writing your copy in a way that focuses on the customer, he or she can then personalize the ad and act accordingly.

3. Know your platform
One of the main things you should know is where your ad will be placed. As a copywriter, you should know that different platforms require different styles of writing in terms of tone and style. For example, having too much text on a billboard ad along the highway won’t be as effective as the same ad placed on a full page pullout in the newspapers. There are plenty of digital ads that don’t require too much copy as well. Different forms of media require different copies to work effectively, and knowing the right way to convey your copy will work wonders.

4. Always have a call to action
At the end of the day, a great ad copy is only as effective as its action taken. Always remember to include a call to action in your copy to get a response from your customers. Usually, a call to action elicits a sense of urgency with instructions on what to do next. Whether you’re asking your customers to visit a website, or not to miss out on a sale going on, your call to action is the most important part of your ad copy. Getting your customers to act is after all the ultimate goal of any advertisement.

5. Always proofread
As a copywriter, you should always be aware of any mistakes in your copy. It’s essential for you to constantly read and reread your copy to make sure it is error free. Some good companies have come up with fantastic ads that have lost out because of a mistake in the ad copy that should have been picked up, Having grammatical or spelling errors is a sign to your customers that you don’t care enough to produce an ad that is error free. To avoid this, proofread and proofread again until you make sure that your copy is good to go.

And that’s all there is to it. Copywriting is really easy once you get the hang of things. If you do sufficient research and preparation for all your clients, your copy is bound to impress. By working on your copywriting skills, you’ll be able to improve yourself even further and learn from your mistakes.

So what are you waiting for? Get out there and write!
